Self posts do not give any karma.

Comments within a self post do give comment karma, however.

That answers my question, but then sparks another questions: why don't self posts give comment karma? When making a self post you are contributing to the site just as much as anyone making a comment. In fact, in submitting a self post, you are actually adding original context to reddit, as opposed to just linking to a website that other people put together. Why are self posts the only why to contribute to reddit that are automatically considered worthless?

TL;DR: I think self posts should either give regular karma or comment karma, since they are contributions to reddit.

I've only been on reddit for 7 months, but I do know that self posts did give karma once. You can view this post to see when self posts stopped giving karma (why I'm not 100% sure).

Self posts were added back in 2006; however, the admins do not care for them, and do not wish to further encourage their use.

Ah, ok. I never really questioned why self posts didn't give karma, since link karma indicates you posted a link.

Good to know a little back story, though. Thanks.

Can you redeem karma for prizes? nope.

Do you need karma to have your comment even viewed or posted? nope.

it's just points. play a lot of video games? same thing. except instead of quarters, the site eats your time and shows you ads here and there.

I get all that. But then say I'm playing a video game, and there is one gun in the game, about on par with all the other guns, except you don't get points when you use it. That would piss me off.

A good part of the reason that submission karma was taken away from self-posts were to discourage "vote up if .." (you like bacon, think Hitler was an asshole, like boobs/science fiction/computers/masturbating) posts, as there was an influx of them for a long time, and they were very annoying as well as complained about.

You do get comment karma for self-posts (and the submitter can still get comment karma for commenting within the submission)- you just don't get submission karma.

As dzneill says at the top, you do NOT get any karma for self posts, even comment karma.

If you'll notice I agree with dzneill that "Comments within a self post do give comment karma". All that you need to do is submit a relatively popular IAmA to see that in action.

The quoted text is what is wrong. You do not get comment karma for self posts.

If you comment within your own self post, you do get karma for your comments (and not for your submission). I don't know any better way to explain it than through an IAmA example. Look at DrMartyMcFly. A one-off account, who has the normal "1" submission karma as he only made 1 submission and it was a new account created solely for that one submission. The only place where he has ever commented on reddit is in that one submission, and he has 12,171 comment karma, and that was well after they stopped giving karma for self-posts. In a few of the subreddits that I mod throwaway accounts are the rule rather than the exception, and they do seem to still get comment karma from comments made within their own submission. But I may just be misunderstanding your point, in which case, sorry :-)

It's okay, I think we both understand it correctly and are on the same page. But you made the statement "You do get comment karma for self-posts", which is not correct. If you make a self post you will get no comment karma for it. You only get comment karma for making comments.

You're saying that you can get comment karma for posting comments in a self post, which is correct, of course. Just wanted to clarify that. Cheers!

Duh- yep, I phrased that wrong! Sorry about that :-) Have a good day!
