In my experience, posts at <1 point stick around in the "what's hot" page for quite a while on the smaller reddits. I think what we really need is more people reading the new queue. More input = more signal, the best way to reduce noise.

Yes, there are a lot of things that would be nice. It would be nice if people didn't litter, etc. Unfortunately the real world sucks and we have to work around it.

Also, what about the bots that downmod other things to look 'real' when they upmod their 'friends' things?

I've submitted this twice before - I think it's a big problem. So much so that I upvote single-vote killed posts which I don't particularly like so long as they aren't spam. I also sort the smaller subreddits I read by "new". It just sucks when your post hits the bottom before anyone sees it. It seems that most good posts get about 60-70% likes, meaning that about 30% will die immediately. (Although smaller subreddits do seem to have a higher upvote ratio.)

Of course the upvote ratio is

As a bit of a friendly critique, you appear to use the mod button for posts that are not related to mod duties, or even philisophical "This is what the reddit should stand for" or "This is the current progress of the reddit" posts.

For instance, Here you used the button for no apparent mod-related reason.

I only used it this time to see if it made a difference, and undistinguished it before you made your comment.

Hm. The downvote arrow could be hidden or disabled as long as the score is not yet shown.

I regularly patrol new submissions and I must say, I smash a lot of spam/reposting really recent things/stupid askreddit questions. I cherish my freedom to downvote some of that shit.

Then, let mods and reports deal with spam and shit. À la Hacker News, downvotes should be disabled for a brief temp period on a post.

I think this is one of the bigger reasons why reddit is so fickle when it comes to getting submissions recognized.

My idea submitted before was to discount the first downvote in the formula [IE, treat 3 up/1 down as being 3 up/0 down until a 2nd downvote is made]
